Introduction:

Most of what you are about to hear has been available on the web for the last 5 years or so, with the exception of my newest compositions. I had a web page that featured these pieces in MIDI format, but I soon realized that there was a problem.

In MIDI format, the music did not sound the same from computer to computer. In order to hear it the way I had intended, each computer that loaded the MIDI had to have the capability of loading custom soundfonts to its sound card. Also, the exact soundfonts I used to create the music had to be loaded on each soundcard. Furthermore, those soundfonts had to be loaded to the exact banks I used.

There were too many things that could go wrong, therefore I knew that most people were hearing cheesy sounding versions of my music. Solution? MP3. Since MP3 is a compressed wave format, it is not dependent on soundfonts By recording the music and converting it to MP3, I could ensure that each piece was being heard the way I intended it to be.

Of course, MP3's are larger than MIDI files (one of my 19KB MIDI's became a 3.2MB MP3) so I needed more space and bandwidth to showcase my music. My free webpage would no longer do. I had to buy the space I needed. That's exactly what I did, and this page is the result.

There are 40 different pieces of music available on this page right now, totalling over 2 hours in running time. I have also made my orchestral pieces available in MIDI format here, so if you would like, check out the difference in sound between the MP3 and the MIDI formats. I'm sure you'll understand why I converted them.

I did not make my electronic pieces available in MIDI format because the general MIDI soundfonts (what most soundcards will use to play MIDI's) simply cannot approximate the sounds I used to create them. They would sound like a completely different piece of music.

One final note: This page is currently under construction. I have made a simple, working page for you to explore, but I do intend to add a few more features in the future. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the site!

Sincerely,
Christopher M. Carlson
